What is Proud Flesh?
Essentially, it too much of a good thing. Proud Flesh, otherwise known as "equine exuberant granuloma", is the excessive growth of granulation tissue that the body produces to fill in a wound. Proud Flesh is a disfiguring growth of the granulation tissue usually accompanied by inflammation of the area. Proud flesh often has a "pink cauliflour" appearance.
Proud Flesh creates a physical barrier to healing when it protrudes over the edges of the wound. If left untreated, Proud Flesh will be unsightly but it can also continue to grow out of control causing impairing normal movement and other health problems for the horse.
Treatment For Proud Flesh In Horses
Proud Flesh can be treated with the application of SCHREINERS HERBAL SOLUTION ® twice a day.
If the proud flesh is discovered while it is still small it should be allowed to dry and form a scab. The scab can then be carefully peeled off and SCHREINER'S HERBAL SOLUTION ® should be applied twice a day.
If the Proud Flesh is quite large your vet may recommend other treatments before the application of SCHREINER'S HERBAL SOLUTION ®. Some of these professional treatments are surgical removal, chemical cauterization, or burning of the granulation bed.
There are many products out there that claim to remove Proud Flesh which contain highly caustic substances to eat away the granulation tissue. This poses a significant problem because they kill indiscriminately and also destroy healthy cells that are needed for the area to properly heal.
